Term Definition
Affected countries/areas

According to 1992 United Nations estimates, over 110 countries in all continents are affected by desertification, which is defined as land degradation in arid, semi-arid and/or dry sub-humid areas. (UNCCD)

Arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas

Areas, other than polar and sub-polar regions, in which the ratio of annual precipitation to potential evapotranspiration falls within the range from 0.05 to 0.65. (UNCCD)

Bottom-up approach

An approach that enhances full participation and involvement of affected populations and local communities, i.e. civil societies and non-governmental organisations. (UNCCD)

Degradation

Loss of biological or economic productivity and complexity of croplands, pastures or forests resulting from land uses or processes including those arising from human activities.

Desertification

Land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting mainly from adverse human impact. (UNCCD)

Drought

The naturally occurring phenomenon that exists when precipitation has been significantly below normal recorded levels, causing serious hydrological imbalances that adversely affect land resource production systems. (UNCCD)

National Action Programme (NAP)

Conceptual and legal framework for implementing the UNCCD at the national and local levels. Their purpose is to identify the factors contributing to desertification and the practical measures necessary to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought. The Convention indicates that affected countries shall elaborate and implement them with the full participation of local communities and all interested stakeholders. Furthermore, they should be fully integrated with other development programmes. (UNCCD)

SLM

Sustainable land management.

Soil and water conservation

Activities at the local level that maintain or enhance the productive capacity of the land in areas affected by or prone to degradation. SWC includes prevention or reduction of soil erosion, compaction and salinity; conservation or drainage of soil water; maintenance or improvement of soil fertility.

Sustainable development

Development policies that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. (UNCCD)

Sustainable land management

The use of land resources (including soils, water, animals and plants) for the production of goods to meet changing human needs, while simultaneously ensuring the long-term productive potential of these resources and the maintenance of their environmental functions.

SWC approaches

Ways and means of support that help to introduce, implement, adapt and apply soil and water conservation technologies on the ground.

SWC technologies

Agronomic, vegetative, structural and management measures that prevent, mitigate or rehabilitate land degradation and enhance productivity in the field.
